CJKI's Japanese Names Dictionary stands as a testament to the CJK Dictionary Institute's extensive compilation of millions of Japanese names and their variants, representing the largest known repository in this field.

Japanese names have earned the moniker "Eighth Wonder of the World." This complexity can be attributed to the challenges even native speakers face in accurately determining pronunciations of kanji characters or in deriving the kanji for names presented in Latin script. For instance, some kanji names may exhibit up to 36 distinct pronunciations, while a single romanized name can manifest in over 100 variations.

Example Queries:

  • Q: How do you read the name 一二三 and 海?
    A: Kirara and Marin.
  • Q: How would you write the surname Hashizume in kanji?
A: Possible options include 橋詰, 橋爪, 橋都, and 橋誥.
  • Q: How many different ways can Akiko be written?
A: At least 168 variations exist, such as 明子, 晶子, 昭子, 彰子, 亜喜子, 安貴子, among many others.

The current subset features over 500,000 common Japanese surnames and given names, along with their hiragana readings. It also comprises more than 800,000 popular romanized variants and includes frequency-use statistics.

Distinctive Features:

  • Comprehensive coverage of approximately 500,000 core names with over 800,000 selected romanized variants based on frequency statistics.
  • An extensive index of over 1.5 million romanized names accommodates a variety of forms, including less common representations.
  • A radical index provides quick access for names with unknown pronunciations.
  • The dictionary facilitates finding kanji versions corresponding to numerous romanized variants. For example, Jun'ichirō may be represented in at least 87 different kanji forms, such as 純一郎 and 潤一朗, while having at least 168 romanized versions.
  • Bilingual bidirectional support enables easy navigation between English-Japanese and Japanese-English within a single application.
  • The design prioritizes usability for both Japanese and non-Japanese users alike.
  • Aesthetically pleasing user interface enhances ease of use.
  • Bilingual interface accommodates both Japanese and English speakers.
  • No internet connection is required for functionality.
  • Features like History and Bookmarks streamline user experience.
